Dear Representative Comer and Representative Raskin,
I am writing to you under the assumption that you assignments to leadership weren’t an oversight. I wish to express my utmost contempt for the actions conducted by this committee. Use of a congressional committee with the intent of blindly fishing for criminal activity on the part of the sitting President is not only despicable but also an unveiled attempt at vengeance against the Democratic Party for impeaching the prior Republican president twice. Such actions are beneath the dignity of our legislative body and serve only to deepen partisan divides.
The extent of the invasion into a private citizen’s life displayed by your committee is legally and politically unacceptable, and it is fundamentally wrong. This behavior fosters fear and mistrust in our government. The legislative branch should be the one institution the public can trust to work in their favor, yet your actions have eroded that trust.
I am appalled by the juvenile antics broadcasted to the world as representations of our government. The name-calling, the display of pornographic photos of the President’s son during a session, and the body-shaming are shameful behaviors unbecoming of elected officials. Such actions do not represent the values and decorum that should be expected from our government representatives.
The committee members are not elected to admonish educators, dictate curriculums, or micromanage student bodies. They certainly have no business interrogating directors on the management of their field operations. The attempted assassination of a former President is a grave matter, but there are other entities tasked with overseeing and reviewing the Secret Service. Those entities understand the importance of not divulging operational details on public television. These spectacles only serve to embarrass and tarnish the image of those involved.
This assassination attempt failed due to inexperience and incompetence, but has anyone considered the successful operations conducted by the Secret Service director? It is unjust to define a person solely by their worst moment. The director would likely have resigned voluntarily without being dragged through the mud by Congress and its demands for resignation. These hearings are nothing more than bipartisan PR stunts designed to give the impression that the House of Representatives is taking action.
My recommendation to the committee is simple: “Do something else!” Your job, for example. Focus on building better inter-party working relationships to avoid an all-or-nothing mentality. Address the safety of law enforcers, which is compromised by current gun laws. Imagine how much safer Former President Trump would have been, if the shooter was unable to decide to go out and just buy a gun, because of prohibitive laws. Those are powers you have, but instead you grandstand. I hope if feels good, because it won’t last forever. People wake up at different speeds, but ultimately everyone is capable of figuring it out, especially with the help of others. This behavior is typical for Republicans, but the Democrats should be ashamed of themselves. You can’t lift yourself by your own merits, so you tear others down their flaws. To take a step further, you use condescension, insults and smug trolling. Keep in mind that you’re all replaceable, and frequently so.
- Gun reform (It seems we need more than a “Good Guy with a Gun”)
- Voting equality
- Integrity and protective guardrails of the three branches of government
- Housing inequality
These are the issues within the purview of Congress. Instead of passing meaningful legislation, the committee is bullying private citizens and civil servants who are more effective in their jobs. These individuals should be explaining their errors to the Inspector General in private interviews, not being publicly humiliated by Congress. Over the past two decades, Congress has virtually abdicated its legislative responsibilities, leading to creative and sometimes corrupt applications of judicial findings or executive orders.
The Biden administration has initiated an incredible recovery, yet the Oversight Committee is doing more than its share to ensure nothing gets done for U.S. citizens. There are dedicated Democratic Representatives working hard to protect our civil liberties, but as a party, we are not gaining ground. Unfortunately, some Democrats also engage in attacking external institutions and agencies in the name of “Oversight,” without considering necessary legislation to protect our government from future abuses, such as those threatened by Donald Trump if he wins the next election. Therefore, it might be prudent to scrutinize Democrats as well.
There is a single Democrat who deserves exemption from the excoriation of this message, and that is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Even as well-known and influential Representative, I have attributed much of her praise and fandom to be overzealous. The majority of her fans are progressives, whom I do not hold in high esteem. As time passes, it becomes more and more clear that ~95% of praise is true (and not saying the other 5% is untrue, just TBD). I still don’t like all of her opinions or voting practices, but she seems sincere and genuine in her convictions. I have no idea what my respect or appreciation is worth, but you, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez have it. Thank you!

“Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”
